Embracing Armenia

Armenia, the land of an ancient people dating back to the earliest times of recorded history, is at the intersection of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.  It is a country of mystery, stunning nature, and millennia-old architecture.

Armenia is accessible to nearly all members of SA (most may enter without a visa, or simply with a visa obtained on the border, or by e-visa).

Roy K., the founder of SA, was of Armenian descent and his parents were survivors of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-23. In a sense, Armenia is where SA began. This gives our convention's theme "We Were Home" a second meaning.

We can't wait for you to join us at "home" at the EMER Regional Convention!

Convention Information

Convention Languages

The three official languages of the Regional Convention will be English, Russian, and Persian. Interpretation will be provided among these three languages as part of the convention. Other language groups (such as Arabic, Polish, Spanish, or others) may arrange their own translation channels for a fee of €27 per day for the additional interpretation transmitter (up to three additional languages, on a first-notification basis). For more information, write to us at [email protected] (this is the email for EMER's Southeast Europe Intergroup, which is hosting the convention).

Accommodation

The convention will take place in Hotel Ripa, in the historic resort town of Tsakhkadzor (pronounced ZAK-kazor), 50 minutes north of Yerevan, the capital. Attendees will reside mainly in Hotel Ripa, and also some additional hotels nearby. More information can be found in the Accommodation section. The cost of accommodation depends on the hotel and the type of room you choose.

Transportation

The convention will provide transportation from a location in Yerevan to and from Hotel Ripa.  That location will be announced in a future email.  Members pay directly for their taxi from the airport to that central location in Yerevan, which will cost approximately €7. You can download a taxi app -- Yandex or GG -- to order a taxi from the airport, or simply order a taxi from the official Yandex taxi stand just before you enter the main terminal to exit the airport.  Be careful not to go with drivers who offer their services directly.

Currency

When paying in cash, you will need to pay in the local currency, the Armenian DRAM.  You may exchange a small amount of money at the airport but the rate there is low.  You can exchange more later when in the capital city, Yerevan, or in Tsakhkadzor.

Languages Spoken in Armenia

The national language and alphabet are Armenian (looks like this Հայերեն), and many people speak at least some Russian.  A small percentage of people speak English.
